Good-bye Rails Envy, Hello Ruby 5!

by Charles Max Wood on August 13, 2009

For those that followed Rails Envy, you’re probably aware that Gregg Pollack and Jason Seifer have discontinued the Rails Envy podcast. The Rails Envy website is still there, for those who are checking it out as one of the 9 Resources for New Ruby on Rails Developers.

I was considering starting my own podcast to take its place, but Gregg Pollack informed me that he was planning to start a new podcast. It’s now up at http://ruby5.envylabs.com and available on iTunes.

I really like the format of the website. It makes it easy to find the different stories covered and add comments on each thing covered. You can click on each topic from the episode and click a fast-forward button that skips to that segment in the podcast, so you can hear what was discussed.

The podcast itself is a little short. I think I liked the format a little longer. With the new format, I feel like I’m waiting for the rest of the podcast. I also like to check out the links from the podcast and that goes way to fast for me. I also miss the campy sound effects, though this being the first podcast, we may find ourselves getting more of those in future podcasts.

Overall, though, the news is what is really important. There is plenty of stuff to check out and the new layout does make browsing the links more interesting and easier to follow.

Glad you like the new cast Charles.

I feel you on some of your comments here. The duration of the cast definitely feels shorter then I’m used to, and I think I had to cut two stories from the cast to keep it under 5. eer.. under 6 rather.

Glad someone likes the campy sound effects. hehe… one person told me I used too many sound effects in the first Ruby5. You can’t make everyone happy I guess.

IMHO the Ruby community needs a news cast, and from what I’ve seen around the net those are usually about 5 minutes. I can take 5 minutes of news… more and I get board.

Hopefully this leaves the door more open to someone (maybe someone like you) to do a more campy, more dialogue, more lengthy and talky podcast. =)

I encouraged Jason to do this cast.. maybe you two should team up.. Just a thought.

Rails 5 is great but just a heads-up that the Rails Envy podcast isn’t dead! The Rails Envy podcast will be continuing so don’t unsubscribe just yet :)

Interesting. Maybe you and Gregg can comment on what will be different between the two podcasts. He’s kind of hinted that Rails Envy will be longer and have more discussion on it. Not to mention to cool sound effects. Is that about the gist of it? or is there a more substantive difference outside of the length and constraints that come with it?
